Instrument Building Workshop - Shamanic Drum

WSD

First workshops are palnned for summer/fall 2016.

Rhythm speaks to us on a level so deep that we respond to it without conscious thought. Our bodies will move to a regular beat without or awareness or volition - we just move. Drums may be the oldest non-vocal instrument in existence, held in awe and reverence by our ancestors long before there was writing.

The Native American Shamans believed that their drumsongs were the voice of the animal who gave its skin to the instrument - respectfully giving a voice to the creature after its death gave a powerful connection to the other world.

Now you can build your own Shamanic drum at a Heaven of Sound workshop. There is a special closeness to an instrument you've built with your own hands and we will do a small ceremony after completion to be sure you and your drum get off to a good start together.

We do the frame and you do the hide cutting, lacing, wrapping, finish and ornamentation with our guidance and assistance.  Rawhide tends to tighten and loosen with humidity changes - these drums are tuneable so that they can be played despite weather changes

The cost of the workshop will depend on the the size of the drum and the hide chosen.
